State of Massachusetts reports "It is estimated that 1 out of every 10 people have abandoned property. September's publication has been released and has in total, over $21 million in new unclaimed accounts with 40,000 individuals and businesses listed."
“Every year, thousands of people are surprised to find out that they have a claim to funds that have been misplaced or simply forgotten” said Treasurer Steven Grossman
Mr. Steven continues “It’s not the state’s money - it belongs to the citizens of the commonwealth. We want to take every step possible to get unclaimed property back into the hands of its rightful owners.”
Massachusetts is rich with over $2 billion dollars in holding of unclaimed property. This property includes lost or forgotten checking and savings accounts, stocks, dividends, investment accounts, insurance policy proceeds, un-cashed checks, court funds, lost coins(as shown in the picture) and many more. Any account with no activity over any three year period is considered "abandoned". As such the law dictates such account must be turned over to the government for safe keeping.
The following is a short list of people with unclaimed money, do you know any of them? If so let them know they are wanted. Unclaimed Property Wants Them. So search for your name and your co-workers, friends and family, you'll be surprised what you can find.
